Xu Shichang played an important role in china’s modern history. He became an Imperial Scholar when in 1886, and he once served as a new army camp staff, business office agent ZuoCheng, Patrol government minister, Military minister, the Northeast Governor, and Postal Department chancerymail and so on in Qing Dynasty. After entering the republic of China, He was well-known as the president at that time. Xu Shichang preferred to reading, writing and painting in his spare time. What's more, he was also enthusiastic about collecting books. Before 1900, he had collected many books. Unfortunately, they had been destroyed in the war. Since 1914, with sufficient financial resources and his friends’ help, he gathered up more than seven thousand kinds of books, and gradually became a famous book-collector in the republic of China. These books were stored in Beijing residence. In 1922, Xu Shichang left Beijing for Tianjin,he also collected many books there. Someone was respectively sent to take care of his books in Beijing and Tianjin. Xu Shichang had nearly more than 10 kinds of books which were Song and Yuan version, but most of them were the Ming and Qing version. In Shi Bu, geographic books accounted for a large proportion.besides, he collected many books which were once in the hands of famous book collcters. The biggest characteristic of Xu Shichang’s book collction is that he collected JiBu largest, especially collection of Potems in the Qing Dynasty. In these books we can find versions of writing, manuscripts and so on. Xu Shichang cherished his books; newly purchased books were always framed and stamped with his seal. Moreover, he also entrusted He Baozhen, his close friend’s son, to compile a bibliography for his books, this is the Book Catalogue of Shu Sui Lou, published in 1935.This article is divided into three chapters. The first chapter is the study on Xu Shichang. It mainly introduces Xu Shichang’s family, his whole life and his several close friends with who he contacted frequently in culture and book collection. In addition, I also give a rough description of books which were compiled by him.Chapter ii for Xu Shichang’s book collection research is divided into six sections. It refers to a series of questions, such as the origin and scale of his book collection, the way he collected books, the characteristics of his books, as well as the books in use and circulation. Besides, I investigate where his books vanished after he died, and summed up some reference and enlightenment on contemporary collection organization. The third chapter researches to the Book Catalogue of Shu Sui Lou. Firstly, I introduce He Baozhen in detail, who is the editor of the the Book Catalogue of Shu Sui Lou. Then I discuss their relationship between the Book Catalogue of Shu Sui Lou and the book catalogue of Qing Dynasty collected works in Wan Qing Yi on the basis of comparison. In the end I focus on analyzing the Book Catalogue of Shu Sui Lou’s characteristics in compiling as well as its value and inadequacy. Overall, Xu Shichang made such great achievements in book collection, I think the background of that time, friends’ help, and powerful political power is the indispensable factors. As a private book-collector in Republic of China, Xu Shichang's collection could contribute to preservating Chinese cultural classics, and inheriting Chinese traditional culture. His cautious attitude, dedication and love of books are worthy of study.
