有清一代文学繁盛，其诗词创作尤为引人瞩目。二百年间不但诗词名家辈出，作品存世数量惊人，丰富的创作实践还刺激了诗学/词学理论的高度发达。然而，囿于种种主客观因素，国内学界长久以来对于这一领域的研究远未达到充分的程度。即使最近几十年来学界已经逐渐承认清代诗词所具有的独特审美内涵与重大诗史价值，并在相关方面取得了实质性推进，但相较于清代诗词的巨大体量，仍明显不足、有待提升。若想进一步整合现有学术资源，促进国内清代诗词研究领域的发展，就十分有必要将作为国内清代诗词研究界的“他者”之一的“英语世界的清代诗词译介与研究”纳入到考量范围之中。这样做一方面有助于我们掌握清代诗词在英语世界的译介和传播等情况，完善国内学界对于中国古典诗词英译史的认识，另一方面也有助于国内学界了解英语世界的清代诗词研究成果，最终促成中西在这一领域的顺畅交流与平等对话。
本文的第一章至第四章关注清代诗词在英语世界中的译介与传播情况，主要从历时性角度依次梳理、评述了清代诗词在英语世界的“鸦片战争前”、“1840年至1912年”、“20世纪上半叶”、“20世纪下半叶以来”这四个阶段中的传播/译介情况。其中，第一章择取了《好逑传》的清诗英译、乾隆诗歌的早期英译以及德庇时《汉文诗解》中的清代诗词英译这三个典型案例进行分析，提醒学界注意清代诗词在早期中诗英译史中所具有的特殊地位与功能；第二章在引入“侨居地汉学”这一概念的基础上，系统梳理了晚清时期的英语报刊书籍中的清代诗词译介情况，还集中评述了侨居地汉学的“集大成者”翟理斯（H. A. Giles）汉学实践中涉及清代诗词的部分；沿着第二章的思路，第三章继续依据传播媒介的不同，梳理了民国时期的英文报刊书籍中的清代诗词译介情况，特别点明了20世纪上半叶中国学者开始在清代诗词西传中发挥作用这一重要史实；第四章在西方汉学中心转移至北美这样的大背景下，分三个阶段对20世纪下半叶以来清代诗词繁荣的译介情况进行了概述。在以上四章中，笔者始终注意在比较文学变异学的视角下、以个案分析的方式，对清代诗词在英语世界的英译策略及出现的语言、文化变异现象进行述评、探因。第五章和第六章以代表性的研究个体或群体为主要评述对象，按照“文学史—文学批评—文学理论”这样的逻辑框架，力求多层次、完整地呈现清代诗词在英语世界的研究实绩，并在此过程中时刻注意与国内相关研究成果的对比、参照。最后，结语部分试图在量化统计的基础上，去审视英语世界的清代诗词译介、研究重点，并在整体上阐述清代诗词西传之于国内学界的研究价值和学术启示，从而为本文做了提振性的总结升华。此外，本文的附录一“英语世界清代诗词传播年表简编”，按照时间顺序扼要介绍了17世纪以来英语世界译介和研究清代诗词的重点文献，尝试为后来的研究者提供了便利可靠的资料索引目录；附录二“英语世界清代诗词重要研究者访谈录”，由笔者对林理彰（Richard John Lynn）、施吉瑞（Jerry Schmidt）两位教授的访谈记录组成，意在以个人化的视角展示这两位学者进入清代诗词领域的心路历程以及他们对英语世界目前的清代诗词译介与研究状况的认识和思考，从而与正文形成互证、补充。
笔者相信，通过对相关文献进行系统整理和深入评述，本文对于国内清代诗词研究领域的发展至少具有以下三点意义：（一）宏观勾勒了清代诗词在英语世界中的译介和研究情况，从而为国内学者了解海外同行提供可靠的信息来源。（二）细致考察了清代诗词诸多英译本的翻译目的和策略，从而为中国古典诗词的英译提供可资参考的经验与教训。（三）以整体审视和个案分析相结合的方法展示了英语世界清代诗词研究成果的特色与价值，有助于刺激国内学界研究方法的更新和研究视野的拓展，并最终能在中西不同语境的参照下将清代诗词研究整体向前推进。

The Qing dynasty had achieved great prosperity in literature, especially in the field of poetry and lyric. A large number of great poets and high-quality poetic writings appeared during these two hundred years, and at the same time, abundant writing practices led to the full development of poetic theories. Due to various subjective and objective factors, for a long time, Chinese scholars did not research this field sufficiently. Even though in recent decades, the unique aesthetic connotation and significant historical value of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric had gradually been recognized, and substantial progress had been made in this field, however, comparing with the massive volume of poetry and lyric of Qing dynasty, the current research is still insufficient and obviously needs to be improved. 
In order to promote the development of our studies on Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric, it is essential to include “the translations and studies of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in the English-speaking world” into the scope of consideration. On the one hand, it will help us to understand their translation and dissemination status of the Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in English-speaking world, and to improve our understanding of the translation histoty of Chinese classical poetry and lyric. On the other hand, it will also help Chinese academic community have a better understanding about the English-speaking world’s researches. This dissertation will ultimately lead to smoother communication and equal dialogue between China and the West in this field.
Given this, this dissertation consists of two parts. The first part focuses on the translation and dissemination of Qing poetry in the English-speaking world. It contains contents from the first chapter to the fourth chapter, and is divided into several periods in chronological order, that is, “before the Opium War”, “from 1840 to 1912”, “the first half of the 20th century”, and “after 1950s”. In order to highlight the special status of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in the early history of Chinese poetry translation, the first chapter chooses Hau Kiou Choaan, Qianlong’s poems, and John Francis Davis’ On the Poetry of the Chinese as three representative translation cases to analyze. By introducing the concept of “Resident Sinology”, the second chapter combs the translation status of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in English newspapers, magazines and books published in the late Qing, and especially reviews H. A. Giles’ translation practices.Similiar to the second chapter, the third chapter investigates the translation situation of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in different media at the first half of 20th century, and also points out that Chinese scholars began to play a more and more important role of translating Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in this period. The fourth chapter is divided into three stages to summarize the translation circumstance of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric since the 1950s. The first part takes the variation theory of Comparative literature as its theoretical guidance, chooses case study as its research approach, and try to describe and analyze the variation phenomenon appeared in the process of translating Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric into English. The second part consists of the fifth chapter and the sixth chapter, takes these representative scholars and their studies as its primary research objects, which will be discussed under three different dimensions, that is, literary history, literary criticism, and literary theory, and pursues the multi-level and complete presentation of the research circumstance of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in the English-speaking world, and simultaneously, compares them with those related research results of their Chinese counterparts. Based on the results of the quantitative statistics, the conclusion part is the comprehensive research of these two parts above, through its discussion, the basic characters and unique value of the translations and studies of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in English-speaking world are illuminated in the light of the cross-cultural perspective.
Besides, the appendix of this dissertation consists of two sections. The first section, “Concise Chronicle of the dissemination of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in the English-speaking world”, briefly introduces the translation and research results of the Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in the English-speaking world since the 17th century, which, I believe, will serve as a convenient and reliable index for the later researchers. The second section contains two records of interviews conducted with Professor Richard John Lynn and Jerry Schmidt. As a supplement to the dissertation, these two interviews are intended to show these two scholars’ personal reasons of choosing this specific academic field, and their reflection and prospects on it.
Through comprehensive and systematic survey, I believe this dissertation’s academic meaning might be summarized as follows: (1) This dissertation outlines the translation and reasearch situation of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric in the English-speaking world from a macroscopic perspective, which provides a reliable reference for Chinese academic circles. (2) Through a detailed examination of translation strategies and purposes of Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric, this dissertation could provide some specific and referenceable experiences for translating Chinese classical poetry in the future. (3) Through the combination of holistic research and case analysis, this dissertation demonstrates the research characteristics of Qing dynasty’s poetry, lyric and poetics in the English-speaking world, and at last, will carry Chinese academic circle’s studies on Qing dynasty’s poetry and lyric forward.
