The COVID-19 Pandemic has changed people’s lifestyles around the world, including but not limited to their mindset, hygiene habits, and patterns of behavior. As one of the most effective pandemic prevention and control measures, limiting social distance has brought about a reduction in global mobility and personal activity space. In the face of the decline of subjective well-being during the epidemic blockade, it is urgent to examine whether the pandemic lockdown has changed people's mobile phone use behavior and whether, and if so, what kind of mobile phone use behavior will affect individual subjective well-being from the perspective of coping. There are two main reasons for this study to focus on college students. One reason is that many colleges and universities have taken the lockdown measures of "not leaving school without necessity" during the pandemic, which has limited the daily activity space of students in the school. The second reason is that college students are young and lack experience in coping with specific situations, and the negative experience of adolescence will have a lasting impact in later life stages. Focusing on the two concepts of mobile phone use and mobility, this study combed the literature on the relationship between mobile phone use and subjective well-being in the fields of communication, psychology, and geography. On this basis, it is confirmed that this study examines the two dimensions of mobile phone use, namely, affordances - the practice type afforded by mobile phone use, and mobility patterns - the relationship between mobile phone use and physical mobility. The former includes informational, social, entertaining, innovative, and efficient mobile phone use; The latter includes substitution, modification, enhancement, and neutrality mobility patterns. At the same time, due to the limitation of actual physical mobility, this study proposes the concept of perceived mobility to examine its potential relationship with individual mobile phone use and subjective well-being. This study combined experience sampling methods and survey method to conduct a one-week empirical survey of 99 eligible college students, and collected 3612 valid data points, including 2325 belonging to the non-lockdown group and 1287 belonging to the lockdown group. In order to investigate the difference between the non-lockdown group and the lockdown group, the relationship between the key variables, and whether mobile phone use and perceived mobility affect subjective well-being, this study conducted independent sample T-tests, correlation tests, and the establishment of mixed linear models for the samples. The empirical study showed that campus lockdown only negatively affected the affective dimension of subjective well-being, but had no significant effect on the cognitive dimension; There was a significant difference in mobile phone use behavior between the lockdown group and the non-lockdown group; Perceived mobility always positively predicted positive emotions and negatively predicted negative emotions, but it had nothing to do with any mobile phone use behavior in the lockdown group; Among all types of mobile phone use behaviors, entertaining phone use negatively affects positive emotions while modification mobility pattern positively affects negative emotions. By investigating the impact of campus lockdown on college students' mobile phone use behavior during the pandemic, and further establishing a relationship between mobile phone use behavior and subjective well-being, this study confirmed the importance of mobility patterns in mobile phone use during the pandemic and associated it with subjective well-being for the first time. At the same time, this study also has enlightenment and reference significance for other groups with limited mobility in practice. |
