中国文学作品作为文化的重要组成部分,承载中国故事,传递中国声音。文学作品翻译是中国文化国际传播的重要渠道。余华是中国当代重要的作家,其作品译介语言众多,作品传播区域广阔。而白亚仁(Allan H. Barr)是余华作品的主要翻译家之一。以汉学家白亚仁翻译作品群为研究内容的相关成果还较为少见。据此,本研究以汉学家白亚仁翻译的余华的五部作品为基础,通过构建汉英平行语料库,使用语料库、文本细读等方法手段,探讨作品的译文面貌以及译文所塑造和传递的中国形象。

本研究一共分为七部分。第一章为绪论,主要梳理余华小说英译以及汉学家白亚仁的研究状况,交代本研究的研究对象、研究方法以及研究思路。第二章为语料库的研制,介绍了语料库研制的顶层框架设计、研制工具以及研制步骤。第三章为白亚仁译文文本特征宏观分析与微观分析,宏观分析从简化、显化和规范化三个翻译语言共性入手,微观分析则通过翻译技巧减译、增译、转译三个角度进行考察。第四章为白亚仁翻译余华作品中的中国文化形象研究,包括译文真实传递的形象和折射变形的形象。第五章通过考察白亚仁翻译的五部余华的作品的OCLC WorldCat馆藏量、亚马逊美国的销售排名、亚马逊美国和Goodreads网站的读者评分,分析该五部作品在英语世界的接受情况。第六章为对国际中文教育中华文化传播的启示。最后为结语,总结了本文的研究成果以及研究不足,提出了研究展望。

       本研究通过研制白亚仁译文语料库,对语料进行宏观与微观上的对比,发现译文未有简化倾向,有显化和规范化的倾向,译文通过减译、增译、转译等翻译技巧在整体上实现忠于原文的基本要求。本研究通过生成关键词表,提取反映中国形象的重要词汇,分析译文真实传递的中国文化形象,包括物质层面的匮乏与发达、精神层面的困顿与解放、制度层面的积弊与反思,以及译文在文化负载表达的翻译、文化符号的翻译以及情感过滤三个角度对中国文化形象的折射与变形。

本研究在研究内容、研究方法、研究视角上具有一定的创新之处。本文在研究内容上注重汉学家的翻译作品群研究,并囊括了境外出版作品;在研究方法上使用语料库方法进行语言性与文学性的定量与定性研究;在研究视角上兼顾通过语料库方法的宏观视角与通过文本细读的微观视角,具有一定的学术参考价值。

Chinese literature, an important part of Chinese culture, tells Chinese stories and amplifies Chinese voices. Their going abroad through translation is an important channel for the international communication of Chinese culture. Yu Hua is an important contemporary Chinese writer whose works have been translated into many languages and spread over a wide area. Allan H. Barr is one of the translators of Yu Hua's works. It is rare to find a study on the group of translated works of Sinologist Allan. Accordingly, this study takes Allan’s five translation works of Yu Hua as the basis to explore the translated appearance of the works as well as the image of China portrayed and conveyed by the translations, using tools such as constructing a parallel Chinese-English corpus, analyzing corpus and carry out word-by-word analysis.

This study is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which mainly summarizes the English translation of Yu Hua's novels and the research status of Allan, and explains the research object, research methodology and research ideas of this study. The second chapter is the process of making the corpus, including the top-level framework design, tools, and steps. The third chapter is the macro-analysis and micro-analysis of Allan's translation text features. The macro-analysis starts from the commonality of translation language: simplification, explicitness and standardization, while the micro-analysis is from the perspective of the translation skills subtraction, augmentation, and transcription. The fourth chapter is a study of the Chinese cultural image in Allan's translation of Yu Hua's works, including the image that the translation really conveys and the image that is refracted and deformed. Chapter Five analyzes the acceptance of the five works translated by Allan from Yu Hua in the English-speaking world by the number of the OCLC WorldCat collections, the sales rankings on Amazon US, and the readers' ratings on Amazon US and Goodreads websites. Chapter Six contains the inspiration for the communication of Chinese culture in international Chinese language education. At last, there is a conclusion, which summarizes the research results and shortcomings of this paper, and puts forward the research outlook.

By developing a corpus of Allan H. Barr's translations and comparing the corpus on a macro and micro level, this study finds that the translations have no tendency to simplify, but have a tendency to make the content explicit and standardized. The translations achieve the basic requirement of fidelity to the original text on the whole by means of subtractive, augmentative, and transitive translation techniques. By making a key term base and extracting important terms reflecting China's image, this study analyzes the real Chinese cultural image conveyed by the translations, including the lack and richness on the material level, the distress and liberation on the spiritual level, and the accumulated shortcomings and reflections on the institutional level, as well as the translation's refraction and distortion of China's cultural image from three perspectives, namely, the translation of culturally loaded expressions, translation of cultural symbols, and the filtering of emotions.

This study has certain innovations in terms of research content, research method and research perspective. This paper focuses on the study of the translated works of sinologists in terms of research content, and includes works published abroad; in terms of research methodology, it uses the corpus method to carry out quantitative and qualitative research on linguistic and literary properties; in terms of research perspective, it takes into account both the macroscopic perspective of the corpus method and the microscopic perspective of the close reading of the texts, which is of certain academic reference value. Chapter 7 is the conclusion, summarizing the research results and research deficiencies of this study, and proposing research prospects.
