随着全球化进程的不断加快和大众传媒的持续发展,电影作为一种推动文化交流的有效工具,正影响着我们的日常生活和人们的意识形态。伴随着我国改革开放的不断深入,中国电影开始在国际电影的舞台上崭露头角。然而由于语言和文化方面的诸多差异,导致中国电影在国际市场上的上映并不十分叫座。 造成这种局面的原因有很多。其中一方面是由于我国目前的翻译理论尚不成熟,较多停留在语言学和语用学的经验总结和规则限定阶段,不利于与实践相结合;另一方面是由于一些译者实践翻译经验不足或者过多地考虑商业利益从而忽略了字幕本身的文化底蕴,没能处理好源语文化与目的文化间的关系,使得受众难以理解。 国产电影赤壁于2008年在全球范围内同步上映,仅上映首周票房即过2亿,其轰动效应可见一斑。然而分析其在海外市场的受众分布,我们不难看出,票房主要集中在国内、日韩以及东南亚等这些备受中华千年文化熏陶的地区,在欧美地区可谓是惨淡收场。本文主要从文化角度研究国产电影字幕翻译,并选取电影赤壁作为个案研究的主要对象。一方面由于其是一部文化内涵与艺术内涵兼具的史诗性电影,受众需要了解一定的文化背景才能更好地融入影片情节当中;另一方面由于该片的导演吴宇森是一个在好莱坞闯荡了15年同时又深谙中国文化的资深导演,他能够较好地平衡东西方文化间的差异。从译者主体性、关联理论、功能目的论这些西方基础翻译理论角度出发,本文探讨了异化、归化、缩减、补偿、释义 5种处理文化差异的策略在影片当中的应用,以期对字幕翻译的研究提供有益的借鉴和参考。

With the accelerating process of globalization and sustainable development of the mass media.film, as an effective tool to promote cultural exchange, is affecting our daily lives and mindset of the people. With the continuous deepening of reform and opening up, Chinese movies started to emerge on the international film arena. However, due to the many language and cultural differences, some Chinese blockbusters released in the international market failed to become a big hit. There are many reasons for this situation. One of them is that our current translation theories are not yet mature and some of the theories are based on experience and preliminary rules,focusing on linguistics and pragmatics, which is not conducive to be integrated with practice; the other one is some translators are lack of practical experience or they concentrate on commercial benefits instead of cultural clements in subtitles so as to be unable to balance the relationship between the original culture and the target culture, making target audiences understand difficultly. The domestic movie called Red Cliffis released simultaneously all over the world in 2008.Its sensational effect could be easily proved by its huge box office, which topped 200 million during the first showing week. However, according to the analysis of its distribution among the overseas target audiences, we can easily see that the box office is mainly in China, Japan, Korea and some Southeast Asian countries.Such kinds of countries are all affected deeply by China’s thousand-year culture.While in Europe and America,the results are quite disappointing.This paper primarily focuses on cultural differences perspective to the subtitle translation of movies and Red Cliff is selected to act as the example. For Red Cliff, served as an epic movie, is quite rich in culture and arts. Whas more, target audiences need to comprehend some cultural idioms to help them better understand this movie. And also since the director of this movie, John Woo, who has developed his career in Hollywood for 15 years, to some extent, knows the right way to connect these two totally different cultures. From the angle of some western basic translation theories,such as translatorsubjectivity,relevance theory,skopostheorie,this paper probes the application of strategies like foreignization, domestication, condensation,compensation and paraphrasing in dealing with cultural difference used in this movie.In so doing,the author hopes to provide some useful relevance to the study on subtitle translation of Chinese movies.
