威尔基·柯林斯（Wilkie Collins, 1824-1889）于1868年创作的《月亮宝石》讲述了1848到1849年间英国殖民主义背景下发生的著名宝石“月亮宝石”失而复得的故事。尽管对该书的反帝国主义倾向已有大量研究，但目前仍无人关注柯林斯的祖国——英国在书中所呈现出的特征。本文结合书中的四个“杂糅式”人物，从外貌表现、思维模式和个性特征、行为举止等角度探讨了《月亮宝石》中的“英国性”的建构。笔者通过文本细读得出结论，“英国性”在外表上指代浅色皮肤和浅色头发，在思维和个性上表现出直率、良好教养与狭隘和偏见共存，在行为上则着重体现为即时行动、避开妇女谈论政治以及礼貌待人。此外，本文还指出，由于该书叙述者的变化，书中建构的“英国性”尚不足以代表其全貌。

The Moonstone, created by Wilkie Collins in 1868, tells the story of the loss and return of the famous jewel, the moonstone, which happens from 1848 to1849 against the backdrop of colonialism in England. Though plenty of research have studied the tendency of anti-imperialism in the book, no attention has been paid to the features of England, Collins’ own country, yet. This thesis focuses on the construction of Englishness from the perspective of appearance, mindset and personalities, and behaviour, through four hybrid characters in The Moonstone. By close reading, this thesis has found that Englishness is considered to be light skin and light hair on appearance; being direct and truthful with good breeding, while narrowness and prejudice still exist in terms of mindset and personalities; immediate action, talking about politics in the absence of women and showing politeness are emphasized in their behaviour. This thesis also finds that since narrators change in the book, Englishness constructed in the book cannot represent the whole picture enough.
