With the development of lexicalization research, there have been different views on the ways in which disyllabic words are produced. This dissertation bases on closed materials and mainly draws on the concept of construction to reveal the process and mechanism of the production of disyllabic words.

The introduction reviews the research on the generation pathways of disyllabic words, summarizes the latest research trends, provides the definition and standards of words in this dissertation, and introduces the research significance, philosophy, methods, material scope, and operational methods of this dissertation.

Chapter 1 focuses on the sources of specific pathways and establishes a disyllabic word production pathway system, reflecting the correlation between lexicalization and word formation, and the communication between micro and macro perspectives.

Chapter 2 provides quantitative statistics based on closed materials, proving from a quantitative and systematic perspective that the main way in which Chinese disyllabic words are generated is through word formation rather than lexicalization.

Chapter 3 is a description of the phenomenon of lexicalization in the materials of this dissertation, as well as a summary of the research methods and necessary conditions for lexicalization. Description is divided into phrase lexicalization and cross layer arrangement lexicalization; The necessary conditions for the occurrence of lexicalization are not possessed by most modern Chinese disyllabic words.

Chapter 4 describes the word formation and related processes of disyllabic words originating from within the vocabulary system, including two types: parallel compound and partial formal compound. Partial formal composites can be classified into three categories: property modified composites, overall partial composites, and species-genus composites. Combined with specific structural examples, the production process was described.

Chapter 5 is a description of the word formation that from outside the vocabulary system and these disyllabic words created by this word formation. The source can be divided into two categories: phrase and cross layer arrangement. Phrase source compound can be classified into coordinate, predicate object, subject verb, and serial verb based on their syntactic properties. Among them, there are fewer coordinate, subject verb, and linking forms, while predicate object forms are particularly abundant. The generation of cross layer arrangement source compound disyllabic words containing virtual morphemes is discussed.

Chapter 6 provides an explanation of the ways and mechanisms of the emergence of Chinese disyllabic words from a diachronic perspective. Firstly, the establishment of structural prototypes has an impact on the subsequent production of related disyllabic  constructions. Due to the existence of language similarity, users will use it to classify and introduce new disyllabic words based on the prototype, and each analogy should be regarded as an extension. The essence of expansion is the expansion of the overall relationship. Expansion will change the internal relationships of the construction, thereby driving new components into the construction, and the entry of new components will further change the relationship of the structure, forming a two-dimensional cyclic expansion, which is an important driving force for the production of disyllabic words. Expansion will also bring users a reanalysis of existing disyllabic words. The results of reanalysis include the generation of new meanings, new categories, new patterns, and new higher-level categories.

Chapter 7 is a reflection on the relationship between Chinese word construction and sentence construction based on this research. On the basis of this dissertation, combined with relevant research, the relationship between word and sentence construction is analyzed from the aspects of their essence, isomorphism, historical development, and their interactive relationship.

The last section is the main conclusion of this dissertation and further research direction.
