Family is an important environment that affects the growth of adolescents and plays a crucial role in the development of adolescent autonomy, psychosocial functioning, and other aspects. Among the many family factors that affect the development of adolescents, parenting style is one of the most important factors. In recent years, more and more studies have begun to focus on the influence of parents' autonomy support and psychological control on the development of adolescents. A large number of studies have shown that they play an important role in adolescents' motivation regulation and psychosocial functioning. The self-determination theory proposed by Deci and Ryan believes that autonomy is driven by the interest of the activity itself when the individual is active, or that the individual identifies the value of external rules and internalizes it as part of the individual. The degree of internalization of external rules by individuals varies, and the motivation regulation of individual behavior can be divided into four different types. Motivation regulation can help us understand what motivates young people to make independent decisions or make dependent decisions.
Studies have shown that motivation regulation can predict the psychosocial function of adolescents. Related studies confirm that the higher the level of identified regulation, the better psychosocial functioning will be. There have been few studies on the development characteristics of adolescent motivation regulation, and studies on adolescent motivation regulation are mostly conducted in the context of western individualistic culture. Therefore, this study studies the development characteristics of adolescent motivation regulation and its relationship with parenting styles and adolescents' psychosocial functioning in a collectivist culture. In addition, some studies have shown that parenting style have a significant predictive effect on adolescent motivation regulation, and adolescent motivation regulation have a significant predictive effect on their psychosocial functioning. Therefore, this study hypothesized that the adolescent motivation regulation plays an intermediary role between parenting style and adolescent psychosocial functioning.
This study is based on self-determination theory and uses questionnaires to measure parenting style, adolescent motivation regulation, and adolescent psychosocial functioning. It mainly includes the analysis of the adolescent motivation regulation, and analyzes the relationship between adolescent motivation regulation and parenting style and adolescent psychosocial functioning, and the mediating effect of adolescent motivation regulation on parenting style and adolescent psychosocial functioning was analyzed. The results show:
1. There is no gender difference in adolescent motivation regulation. There are grade differences in adolescent motivation regulation when they making dependent decisions. The main manifestations are as follows: the identified regulation and introjected regulation level of the dependent decision making of adolescent in the seventh grade is significantly lower than that of the twelfth grade; the external regulation level of the dependent decision making of the seventh grade adolescent is significantly lower than that of the eleventh grade and twelfth grade.
2. The autonomy support of parents significantly positively predicts the level of identified regulation of the independent decision making and dependent decision making of adolescents and the level of introjected regulation of the dependent decision making; parents’ independent support significantly negatively predicts the level of external regulation of independent decision making and dependent decision making among adolescents; the psychological control of parents significantly positively predicts the level of introjected regulation and external regulation of independent decision making and dependent decision making of adolescents, and the level of identified regulation of independent decision making.
3. The level of the identified regulation and introjected regulation of adolescents' independent decision making and dependent decision making can significantly positively predict happiness; the level of external regulation of adolescents' dependent decision making can significantly negatively predict happiness; the level of identified regulation of adolescents' independent decision making and dependent decision making can significantly positively predict prosocial behavior; the level of introjected regulation of adolescents' dependent decision making can significantly positively predict prosocial behavior; the level of introjected regulation and external regulation of adolescents' independent decision making and dependent decision making can significantly positively predict internal problems; the level of introjected regulation of adolescents' independent decision making can significantly positively predict external problems; the external regulation of adolescents' independent decision making and dependent decision making can significantly positively predict external problems; the level of identified regulation of adolescents' dependent decision making can significantly negatively predict external problems.
4. The identified regulation and external regulation of adolescents' independent decision making, the identified regulation, introjected regulation and external regulation of adolescents' dependent decision making play a partial mediation role between parental autonomy support and psychosocial functioning of adolescents; the identified regulation, introjected regulation and external regulation of adolescents' independent decision making play an partial mediation role in parental psychological control and the psychosocial functioning of adolescents.
