Digital Hoarding Behavior (DHB) was initially defined as the uncontrolled accumulation of digital content by users, i.e., excessive storage or possession of digital resources, which can lead to stress and confusion to a certain extent. With the rapid development of information technology and the popularity of network applications, digital hoarding has evolved into a pervasive network behaviour pattern, reflecting the high value that users place on specific information and their anticipation of future needs. In order to better understand and effectively guide this behaviour, it is important to explore its underlying mechanisms, including identifying the psychological motivations behind information accumulation and analysing how this behaviour plays a role in individuals' social self-expression. This paper firstly conducts a literature review around the concept and characteristics, motivation, and measurement of digital hoarding. Secondly, it draws on existing research results and combines psychological ownership theory and technology acceptance model to construct a mechanism model for the formation of digital hoarding behaviours under the perspective of internal motivation, with instrumental and emotional value perception as the independent variables, psychological ownership as the mediator variable, and digital hoarding behaviours as the dependent variable, and at the same time, it explores the moderating role that technological proficiency plays in the process of psychological ownership's influence on digital hoarding behaviours. This paper adopts the method of questionnaire survey to test the research hypotheses. The results show that there is a significant correlation between the elements, while psychological ownership plays a partially mediating role in the process of instrumental and emotional value perception influencing digital hoarding behaviour. In addition, the results of the mediator-based moderating effect test show that technological proficiency also plays a significant positive moderating role. This paper further demonstrates through empirical research that there is no significant difference in the performance of digital hoarding behaviours among people with different physical hoarding habits, i.e., digital hoarding behaviours are more influenced by individuals' value perceptions of specific contents rather than transformed from traditional hoarding behaviours. Based on the results of the empirical study, this paper proposes suggestions on how to correctly guide digital hoarding behaviours, analysing the three dimensions of individual users, social media platforms and the overall information environment. Individual users focus on improving their information management ability and self-awareness, social media platforms need to optimise their information classification, storage and recommendation mechanisms to reduce information overload and promote the effective use of information, and the overall information environment should take into account the synergistic relationship between people and technology, and the quantified-self approach will not only help individuals to achieve self-optimisation and enhancement, but will also promote the establishment of a more efficient and orderly digital information environment. The quantified self approach not only helps individuals to achieve self-optimisation and improvement, but also promotes the establishment of a more efficient and orderly digital information environment. |
