Together with D.H Lawrence, Joseph Conrad, and Virginia Woolf, E.M Forster has been regarded as one of the greatest writers in 20th century. Being dedicated in writing for his entire life, he managed to convey his belief in liberalism, romantic tradition and personal relationships by words. Travel had a significant effect on his writing, especially the novels. His travel to Italy contributed to the Italian novel A Room with a View-his “most Jane-Austenlike” novel. One of this novel’s major motifs can be classified as cultural conflicts, which embodies the conflicts between British and Italian cultures the conflicts between medieval and Renaissance cultures, the heroine Lucy’s inward conflicts, and so on. The process of the story is accompanied by Lucy’s inwardly natural needs against the outmoded conventions. Furthermore, conflicts are reflected in forms of conventionality and naturalness, externality and internality, and fossilized thinking and freedom. Liberalism is advocated here, with the emancipating of the middle class female, Lucy, from the medieval bounds. Another key point is the “undeveloped heart”, typically occupied by Cecil, who is “with well-developed body, fairly developed mind” but artificial, snobbish, and languid. He here stands for the conventional British middle class. This flock of people is in conflict with the liberals represented by the Emersons. Thus this paper will focus on unfolding the cultural conflicts in different aspects. By making full use of the information of then social and historical background, the overall cultural conflicts will be clearly understood. Thus the approach to this novel will be deepened.
