This paper mainly analyzes the meaning of “survival of the fittest” through the experience of a dog called Buck in The Call of the Wild. As we know, the common meaning of this phrase is that only the strongest creatures have the right to survive, so this phrase usually is full of negative feeling. In other words, people could feel the cruelty when hearing it; however, the author of this story, Jack London gave this phrase some positive emotion, and he realized that only the people who tried their best to adapt to the environment can survive and live better life. Meanwhile, more and more people started to have the same feeling and they can treat this phrase in a rational manner. This paper also follows the right opinion towards this phrase. At the beginning of this paper, it briefly introduces the author’s life experience and the plots of this story. And then, it introduces the meaning of this phrase “survival of the fittest” both in the history and today. The major focus of this thesis is to analyze the meaning of this phrase in the story of The Call of the Wild. It depicts how Buck survives in a new and harsh area and what he has learned to live a comparably better life, which is the main point the author wants to tell us.
