Emojis are important nonverbal cues for emotional expression during Internet communication, and research on emojis has gradually emerged in recent years, but there is still little research on how emojis affect interpersonal outcomes such as forgiveness. The present study argues that emojis used in apologies are a spontaneous and unique cue that may facilitate interpersonal forgiveness behaviors. A total of 323 participants were recruited for the study, and the effects of using remorse emojis when apologizing on forgiveness were explored through a pre-study and two formal experiments using recall methods and contextual simulation experiments. And the mediating role of empathy and attribution of responsibility is explored in the context of Emotions As Social Information theory. The results showed that (1) People would choose emojis that resemble the true facial expression of remorse when apologizing; (2) The use of remorse emojis when apologizing promote forgiveness of the receiver; (3) Empathy mediated the process of emojis promoting forgiveness, i.e., the use of remorse emojis increased the level of individual empathy and thus increased forgiveness; attribution of responsibility did not play a mediating role. The findings have implications for the development of both interpersonal and emoji research.
