司各特·费茨杰拉德可谓是美国文学史上的一位巨人,其代表作《了不起的盖茨比》,以其华丽的文字和对于美国二十世纪二十年代社会众生的栩栩如生的刻画而见长,是一部当之无愧的文学巨著。读者们沉醉于杰伊·盖茨比所编织的美国梦中,赞叹男主人公的爱情之热烈深沉,惋惜美梦破灭时的悲惨境地,同时,也谴责女主角戴西·布坎南的冷酷无情与拜金。读完全篇,笔者也有深深地思考。 正如作者本人所说的一样,“这是一部写给男人的书”。在此书即将出版之际作者还在担心因为书中对女性形象的负面描写而造成的女性读者的不满。在回味盖茨比悲剧一生的同时,笔者对书中的女性形象产生了很大的兴趣。通过对她们的仔细阅读分析以及对作者生平的探究,笔者认为,不应该指责戴西的拜金,乔丹·贝克的冷酷,茉尔特·威尔森的虚荣,以及书中众多女性的放荡纵情。笔者愿通过本文,为戴西等女性角色“平反”,揭示作者下笔的缘由以及社会背景,并利用女性主义文学批评方法介入,对女性角色受压抑的本质进行简要分析。 |

F. Scott Fitzgerald is a giant in the history of American Literature. His representative work, The Great Gatsby, is famous for its beautiful language and vivid portray of America in the 1920s. It is a fully deserved masterpiece. The readers are enchanted in the American dream which Jay Gatsby draw up, admire his enthusiastic and profound love, and feel sorry for his miserable situation when the dream dies. Meanwhile,they blame the leading character,Daisy Buchanan's merciless and materialism. Like the author himself stated,"It is a book for men".When the book is about to published, Fitzgerald felt anxious because the negative female figure he portrayed would dissatisfied his female readers.In retrospect of Gatsby's tragic life,this paper pays much attention to the female characters rather than the male characters in the book.Through thorough reading and analyzing and the exploration of Fitzgerald's life, we shouldn't reprove Daisy's materialism,Jordan Baker's cold-blooded,Myrtle Wilson's vanity and all the other female characters'dissolute.This paper is to redress the female figures in the novel, expose the origins of those figures and the social background. Furthermore, all the attempts will be analyzed in the light of the feminist approach. |
