During the 1950s and 1960s, the literature of the Beat Generation becoming a unique literary genre in post-WWII America. The works of the Beat Generation remain their influence on the spiritual world of the youth even in today’s speeding society. Jack Kerouac, known as the King of the beats, used On the Road as a guidance to the beat youth. In the novel, the two heroes started their journey to escape from the emptiness of the white society. Each of their movement was a reflection of the beats’ resistance to the middle class culture. Noticeably, in On the Road, Paradise and Moriarty expressed several times their yearning toward the black culture. This essay will provide a thorough discussion towards this phenomenon by text analysis based on Hebdige’s subculture theory and the White Negro theory. The analysis will also focus on the origin and feature of the black culture itself. In the end, the essay seeks an explanation to Kerouac’s apparent preference towards the black culture and the role of black culture in the beat’s resistance against the middle class culture.
