This thesis focuses on the “transgression” theme in Wuthering Heights from the perspective of space. It first uses the theory of space to classify the spaces in the novel into three types: physical space, social space, and psychological space. Then, it analyzes the presentation of the “transgression” theme in each type of space, so as to try to explore how Wuthering Heights expresses the “power of transgressing” through “space”.

It proposes that the space plays an important role in showing the “transgression” theme in Wuthering Heights. The opposition between the two main physical spaces, Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, in terms of architectural features, surroundings, interior decoration, room configuration, weather, etc., shows the conflict of characters’ personalities and the contradiction between barbarism and civilization, chaos and order. The incompatibility of two physical spaces indicates that the boundary between them creates difficulties in communicating with each other. In addition, the characters’ refusal to communicate and their lack of communication ability not only make the living space of the characters completely isolated from the outside world but also limit the interpersonal communication between them. Therefore, the social space of Wuthering Heights is a closed world lacking communication, in which extremely lonely characters live. In the psychological space, which is the result of the projection of the characters’ will on the physical space, the lonely characters all have strong desires to cross boundaries and even create an illusioned reality to help realize their desire for transgression. It is the illusion that helps the characters’ relationship to rebuild harmony and helps the lonely characters to gain transcendental freedom.

Various boundaries exist in the story, including the boundaries between self and other, reality and illusion, life and death, civilization and barbarism, order and chaos, existence and non-existence, and so on. The novel encourages transgression and believes that boundaries should be dissolved. Wuthering Heights celebrates the greatness of human beings to transgress boundaries and pursue freedom through the omnipresent transgressive power in the story.
