There is an old Chinese proverb saying: “It takes ten years to grow trees, yet it takes hundreds of years to grow men.” Education is so important for a country, and it is the number one concern for almost every family. In recent years, the genre of youth education have been rising dramatically from TV series, documentaries, to TV programs. Many have attracted lots of audiences, for examples, TV series “A Love for Separation”, “Growing Pain”, documentary “Born in 2000” and documentary program “X-Change” are all very popular. They all have a common character, which is focusing on the mental growth of youngsters, where the missing part of home education have enormously affected the relationships between the children and their parents. Since the education for youngsters have drawn more and more social attention, more and more documentary programs have been paying attention to such issue, in the hope of interfering the reality and solving the problem. The documentary program “X-Change” produced by Hunan TV is among the best of its type, it features innovative documentary format, long continuity, good education effectiveness, and positive public interests, as well as debatable topics. By looking through the program “X-Change”, this essay is trying to study its social settings and its innovations, then to understand its development process, to analyze its features, problems and weaknesses, and to conclude its explorations, in order to provide an example for future development of TV programs of such genre. To explore how the program’ s narrative mode and topic setting have helped bettering its methods of involving in social issues, intervention in realities, burdening the social responsibilities, and playing an important role in serving the society.
