The present thesis is an attempt to explore Jeanette Winterson’s novel Frankissstein: A Love Story, focusing on themes of gender, humanity, and consciousness. It discusses the transgression of three traditional binary concepts: gender binary, human/non-human binary, and mind/body binary. For the gender binary, the limitations and prejudices associated with traditional gender concepts are explored through character interactions and conflicts, illustrating the constraints and harm they impose on individuals. Then, two means for transgressing this binary are proposed based on the novel. Additionally, the thesis analyzes the ambiguous boundary between humans and machines and proposes a means – “cyborg” as a possibility for the human future. Furthermore, the thesis delves into the relationship between the mind and the body by analyzing the characters’ dialogues. By depicting the characters’ different attitudes toward the body and mind, Winterson highlights the complex relationship between the two and underscores the body’s importance in personal identity and emotional experience. Ultimately, through in-depth analysis of characters, the thesis examines the reasons behind these transgressions and their implications. It concludes that Winterson tries to challenge societal norms and advocate a more inclusive and fluid understanding of all beings, while also cautioning against the loss of essential human qualities in the pursuit of technological advancement.
