吴湖帆,出生于苏州名门,从小有着良好的家学基础,是民国最后一批传统文人的代表人物。吴湖帆曾与张大千齐名,人称“南吴北张”,与冯超然、吴子深和吴待秋合称为“三吴一冯”,是民国时期海上画坛中传统派的权威。吴湖帆是民国时期一位集诗、书、画、鉴、藏于一身的艺术大家,因画名太盛以致书名被掩。吴湖帆数十年习字朝夕不辍,身体力行。吴湖帆篆隶受祖父吴大澂影响最深;楷书初喜欧阳询的端庄肃穆、薛稷的劲挺犀利,后亦受汉魏碑刻拙朴浑厚的感染;行书初学王文治的清淡婉美、董其昌的清新飘逸,中年学宋徽宗赵佶瘦金体的瘦直挺拔,后得米芾的《多景楼诗卷》手迹后便朝夕研读,心摹手追;晚年草书则多受怀素《自叙帖》潇洒奔放的影响。吴湖帆的篆书光洁匀整、结构严谨、功力深厚;隶书风格多样且多受《曹全碑》影响,总体来说属秀丽一路;楷书瘦硬挺拔却不失温润、笔笔精到;行书清峻雅逸,落笔流畅,波折荡扬,结体内紧外舒,擒纵有致;草书大开大阖、清超雄健。总体来说,吴湖帆的书法尊重传统,特别是其名世的行楷书属于正统二王帖学一路,书法风格在被碑学思潮和创新思潮笼罩的民国书坛独树一帜。

Wu Hufan is born as a blue blood in Suzhou with good base knowledge from father-to-son. He is the last representative personage of traditional scholars in the Republic of China. If compared the family academic, no one can surpass Wu Hufan in modern times.Wu Hufan was on par with Zhang Daqian, called the "Southern Wu Northern Zhang", with Feng Chaoran, Wu Zishen and Wu Daiqiu collectively called as the "Three Wu One Feng", and is the authority of traditional Maritime painting school during the period of Republic of China. Wu Hufan is a collection of poetry, books, paintings, appreciation, collector in a period of the Republic of China, but the fame of painting was too much the mask so as to cover his fame of penmanship. Wu Hufan never stopped practicing writing overnight, and set an example by personally taking part. Wu Hufan’s seal character and clerical script is deeply influenced by grandfather Wu Dacheng ; he early likes Ou Yangxun’s dignified silence and Xue Ji's bold sharp of the standard script, also appreciates the simplity and vigorousness of the inscription of Han and Wei dynasty period ; at the beginning, learning the running script followed Wang Wenzhi’s light prettiness, and Dong Qichang’s freshness and elegance, but followed Song Huizong Zhao Ji’s thin gold style’s straight and tall in his middle-aged, after he got Mi Fu’s handwriting of "Many Sights Building Poetry", he read it desperately and imitated it over day and night; his cursive script was influenced by Huai Su’s "Autobiography" in his late life. Wu Hufan’s seal character is bright and clean, rigorous structure and deep capability ; the style of official script is diverse influenced by "Cao Quan Tablet", overall its belongs to beautiful style; his regular script is thin hard forceful yet warm, precise in every stroke; his running script is delicate, pretty and smooth, twists and turns, and the structure of characters is tight and relaxing; his cursive script is open and powerful. Overall, Wu Hufan’s calligraphy respects for tradition, especially his regular script and running script belongs to orthodox two Wang. The style of calligraphy is extraordinary in the republic of China covered by tablet study ideological trend and innovative ideas of its own, shine brilliantly.
