Assessment of Welfare State of Asian elephants in Zoos in China

The welfare state of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Chinese zoos was assessed by literature reviews and field visits. Literature reviews got information of 275 captive Asian elephants in 47 zoos in China from 1953 to 2017, and field visits in 2017 surveyed 22 Asian elephants in 7 zoos. Assessment of welfare state mainly used AZA Standards for Elephant Management and Care and Zoo Design written by Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens as guides, and results were compared with the captive Asian elephant welfare state in Europe and North America. The assessment followed the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, by using body conditions index and feed to assess freedom from thirst and hunger; the enclosure conditions and the colony structures to assess freedom from discomfort; Lifetimes and causes of death, foot problems and reproductive health to assess freedom from pain, injury, and disease; the opportunities to express natural behaviors and whether there is stereotyped behaviors to assess freedom to express most normal behavior; the way of training to assess freedom from fear and distress. In addition, the results of assessment showed the foot problems and stereotyped behaviors of Asian elephants were associated.
