With the proceeding of great social changes in China, the flow of population is increasing, and the interpersonal relationship in the society is becoming more mobile. Therefore, individuals have more choice and freedom in choosing, building and ending relationships. Different levels of relational mobility will urge people to adopt different interpersonal strategies. For instance, high relational mobility society, like an open market, encourages adaptive interpersonal strategies, such as valuing and showing their interpersonal value. Social changes also promote the marketization of the field of love and marriage in China and redirect people’s mating strategies. The calculative mindset of mate choice reflects the behavior pattern that contemporary people treat the issues of mate choice as a mathematical problem to quantify and calculate, including the attitude to others as well as to oneself, which is a cognitive strategy adapted to the market pricing relationship model. From the perspective of social ecological psychology, this study explored the influence of relational mobility, a kind of important socioecological factors in the interpersonal environment, on people’s cognitive strategy in mating, focusing on whether relational mobility can lead to calculative mindset in mate choice and what’s the psychological mechanism underlying. Based on these above, this study built hypothesis that relational mobility would lead to the increase of calculative mindset in mate choice, and suggested that the perception of marketization in interpersonal relationship and instrumentalization in interaction could be used as the mediating mechanism. To verify the hypothesis, three studies were conducted. In study 1, we combined the macro level and individual level, a large-scale sample data(N=87429)from 31 provinces across China, supported the positive link between regional relational mobility(regional divorce rate) and calculative mindset of mate choice on a dating site(analyzing the text of individual self-introduction and mate selection requirements on dating website). Study 2 explored the questions from the individual level by the method of questionnaire survey. The results showed that the perceived relational mobility in peoples’ current environment was positively correlated with the calculative mindset of mate choice about themselves and others. To exclude the influence of interference factors, study 3a and study 3b employed laboratory research to clear the causality by creating different mobility environments. We manipulated relational mobility and set an imaginary social background in laboratory settings. Study 3a found that the individuals in the high (vs. low) relational mobility group had stronger self-calculation mindset, and perception of marketization in interpersonal relationship and instrumentalization in interaction both played a mediation role in the process. Study 3b showed higher relational mobility induced a stronger sense of marketization in interpersonal relationship, which led to more calculative mindset towards others. Finally, we discussed several theoretical implications. This study is the first to examine the effect of relational mobility on self-presentation and interpersonal strategies in the context of mate selection, and to explore its psychological mechanism. On the one hand, the results can theoretically expand the understanding of individual adaptability to environment. In practice, the empirical results of the research can help to understand the psychological and behavioral strategies of people in the field of mate selection during the period of social transition and can be used as a reference for the prevention of user research on dating sites. Meanwhile, there are several limitation that awaiting discussion. One concerns the limitation of only examining dependent variables on dating market and an extensive work on other situation is expected. Another has to do with the exploring on different psychological mechanism. For future study, we can explore the interaction effect between personal relational mobility and environmental relational mobility.
