在文化全球化背景下,各国之间文化的交流和碰撞日益加强。翻译作为跨文化交际的重要工具,美剧也是人们了解国外文化的重要途径。随着越来越多的优秀外国电影和电视作品涌入中国市场,为广大中国观众所青睐,对影视字幕翻译研究的需求也随之不断增长。

以上世纪80年代美国印第安纳州的霍金斯小镇为故事发生的背景，《怪奇物语》以紧凑的故事情节讲述了一个拯救霍金斯的冒险故事，情节跌宕起伏又不乏美式幽默，主人公们随着故事情节的推动都在渐渐成长,感情真挚又不过分煽情。

文化负载词,是指打上了一定语言社会的地域和时代的烙印,体现语言承载的文化信息、反映人类社会生活的词汇。英语文化负载词在美剧或电影台词中很常见,要想让观众体会到原句独特的“美式”幽默,跨越中美不可避免的文化差异,文化负载词的翻译便成为了重点也是难点之一。

本文从功能对等理论视角出发,以美剧《怪奇物语》中的文化负载词为案例,剖析《怪奇物语》字幕汉译的翻译策略。在功能对等理论的指导下,本文旨在丰富字幕翻译的相关理论研究,为字幕翻译工作者提出更多有益的建议。同时帮助中国观众更好地理解美剧内容,促进不同文化的碰撞与交流。

Cultural contacts and integration among countries are enhanced vastly in the background of cultural globalization. Translation is an important tool for cross-cultural communication, and people can learn about foreign culture by watching American TV series. As more and more high-quality foreign movies and TV series surge into China and are enjoyed by the majority of Chinese audiences, the need for subtitle translation research has emerged.

Set in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, in the 1980s, Stranger Things is a tightly plotted, exciting, and adventurous story told from the perspective of five young children. It embodies the fast-moving plot and humorous dialogue of the American TV series. The main characters all grow up along with the storyline, and their feelings are sincere without being overly emotional.

Culture-loaded words are associated with a specific language society’s region and time, representing the cultural information that humans convey through their language and social interactions. English culture-loaded words are common in the lines of American TV series and movies. Therefore, in order to make the audiences experience the unique “American” humor of the original sentences and cross the inevitable cultural differences between China and America, the difficulty of translating culture-loaded words has emerged as a major issue.

From the perspective of functional equivalence theory, this paper takes the culture-loaded words in the American TV series Stranger Things as examples to analyze the translation strategies applied in the Chinese subtitle. Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, it aims to enrich relevant theoretical research of subtitles translation, and put forward more useful suggestions for subtitle translators. Under this circumstance, the content of American TV series can be more easily understood by Chinese audiences. The collision and communication between different cultures could be promoted.
