20世纪初，中国通史写作中多元分期标准的成熟和学者对唐宋王朝历史转型的认识，勾勒出隋唐一代历史的大体轮廓。伴随着西学东渐，中国史学效仿西方分科治学，专门史和断代史同时出现在北京各大学历史系课程中，隋唐五代史作为课程名称出现。20世纪20年代，社会史论战使社会经济问题在隋唐史研究中凸显。30年代，李唐世系争论和区分中古时期人物身负何种胡汉血统及文化的系列努力则为隋唐史史料考据和具体问题探究打开思路，隋唐史作为断代史研究方向逐渐成型。曾在北京师范大学历史系学习工作的王桐龄、邓之诚、刘盼遂等教师与鞠清远、黄现璠等学生均为隋唐史研究方向的形成作出贡献。

At the beginning of the 20^th century, the maturity of multiple stages in the writing of Chinese general history and scholars' understanding of the historical transformation of Tang and Song Dynasties outline the vein of the history of Sui and Tang Dynasties. With the spread of Western learning to the East, Chinese historiography followed the example of western division standard. Both specialized history and dynastic history appeared in the history courses of Beijing universities. The History of Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties first appeared as a course name. The Debates on Chinese Social History in the 1920s made social and economic issues prominent in the study of Sui and Tang history. In the 1930s, the controversy on the lineage of ancestors of Li Yuan and the efforts to distinguish whether medieval figures were of Hu or Han descent, and whether they were influenced by Hu or Han culture opened up ideas for the textology and specific problems in the history of Sui and Tang Dynasties. The history of Sui and Tang gradually took shape as the direction of the study of dynastic history. Teachers such as Wang Tongling, Deng Zhicheng and Liu Pansui, who used to work in the history department of Beijing Normal University, and students such as Ju Qingyuan and Huang Xianfan have all participated in the formation of the research direction of Sui and Tang history.
