The officials in Guangdong epitaphs in the Song Dynasty were found in all states of Guangdong. They advised agriculture, lightened the burden of taxes, encouraged overseas trade, dealt with civil and judicial issues, maintained public order, quelled rebellions, and properly settled the exiles. They completed local governance well. At the same time, they promoted culture and education by building Confucius and Han Yu temples, teaching Cheng Zhu Neo-Confucianism, and starting schools, which promoted the cultural development of Guangdong. The Guangdong scholars played an important role in the cultural development of Guangdong during the Song dynasty. They attached great importance to family education, and their children were appointed as officials through examinations in through the ages. At the same time, they formulated family teachings, which involved many aspects such as how to behave in life and how to be an official, reflecting the characteristics of native land emotion of the family teachings of the scholars. The Song Dynasty's “Meticulous rule” over Guangdong was reflected in the combination of the imperial examination and the temporary magistrate system, as well as the diligent handling of various local government affairs by officials. "Flexible governance" was reflected in the edification of common people and developing cultural education. These measure accelerated the process of the cultural integration of Guangdong into a unified country. |
