Since the May Fourth Movement, illness depiction has been an essential means for Chinese writers to express their aesthetic preferences and philosophical perspectives. While the romanticization of illness was in vogue during the 20th century in Chinese literature influenced by Romanticism, Zhang Ailing’s approach to illness writing was unconventional and usually demonstrated a characteristic of “de-romanticizedness” portrayal. In Zhang Ailing’s works, pulmonary tuberculosis, previously associated with aristocratic temperament, was transformed into a nightmare causing physical deformity for women; Meanwhile, the “mad illness” reflected a female’s identity anxiety as the “Other” in the patriarchy system, with the deformity of both the body and identity signifying the internalized oppression and complexity of female experiences. Zhang Ailing’s de-romanticized writing style was based on her profound understanding of the realities of modern Chinese women’s lives. Her approach to illness writing was related to the social attributes of illness as a system that established a hierarchy of power relations. This thesis aims to explore how Zhang Ailing’s de-romanticized style helps to illuminate the realities of modern Chinese women’s lives and how her critique of societal hierarchies related to illness is reflected prominently in her representation of disease. |
