Since reading news online through mobile phones has been so common for people to keep pace with the world, online news transedition are receiving more attention. This report discusses how context will influence online news translation and edition. According to Context Theory, the Dynamic Context Concept points out that not all potential contexts play a role in delivering and understanding discourse. Instead, only those relevant to communication can be viewed as context.

Besides, in communication, participants are not passively constrained by contexts, but actively constructing new context to promote the whole process. Based on the Dynamic Context Concept, this report selects three main contexts that affect online news transedition, describes how these factors influence translator, as well as analyze how translators build new contexts to enhance this cross-cultural activity.

Source texts are mainly from authoritative newspapers or agencies such BBC and the Associated Press, and most of them focus on political issues, with some about technology, environment, and other topics. This report first introduces why genre context, new media context, and cognitive context are main factors that affect news transedition and then exemplifies how these factors play part in practice.

A complete news script generally consists of three parts: title, introduction and body, each of which should conform to the basic principle and essential function of news genres. In addition, bilingual cross-chapter reporting provides background information for translators to understand the original text. New media context has transformed the way how news is disseminated and presented. For example, as various social platforms and news appliances have emerged, and readers' reading habits have changed, translators should tailor the scripts according to the specific rules of different platforms. New media context has spawned new narrative models of news, providing more choices for translators in transediting news. As for cognitive context, it explores how translators’ brain processes information while translating and editing news. This bilingual activity includes two rounds of ostensive-inferential communication and three communicators. To be more specific, as a bridge between the English authors and Chinese readers, the translators should infer the communicative intention of the original text, and adopt appropriate methods to manifest the communicative intention to the readers. By doing so, the readers can obtain the maximum cognitive effect with minimal processing effort, so as to achieve the best relevance between the communicative intention of the original text and the expectations of the readers.

This report consists of six chapters. Chapter One describes task background and the requirements of the client. Chapter Two is literature review, introducing the research status of news transedition and Context Theory. Chapter Three is why genre context, new media context, and cognitive context are selected. Chapter Four will analyze how these factors influence transedition in detail. Chapter Five is case study. Chapter Six summarizes this translation practice.
