1916年前后，天津法租界试图进一步扩张，将老西开一带的土地纳入控制范围，此举引发天津社会各界的抗议，被称为“老西开事件”。《益世报》和《大公报》作为近代天津最具影响力的两家报刊媒体，对该事件给予了高度关注，体现了天津社会各界对老西开事件的舆论反应。首先，报刊文章通过回溯老西开一带领土纠纷的历史渊源，整理了法租界自划定以来的扩张过程及交涉细节，从中寻找历史证据以证明老西开一带属于中国领土。同时，发挥报刊媒体的实效性，以法国驻津外交领事采取的收租纳捐、插签占地、拘押岗警等一系列举动为线索，及时跟进交涉进展，对事件的整体过程进行了详细的记录，并针对其中的重要人物和事件进行集中报道。此外，两家报刊媒体在此事件中作为表达民意的重要渠道，发挥了强有力的舆论监督作用，并积极支持维护国土国权的行动，承担了重要的社会责任。

Around 1916, the Tianjin French Concession attempted to expand further and brought the land in the Laoxikai into the control area. This triggered a protest from all walks of life in Tianjin and was called the Laoxikai incident. Yi Shi Bao and Ta Kung Pao, as the two most influential newspapers in modern Tianjin, paid great attention to the incident which reflected the public opinion reaction of all walks of life in Tianjin.First of all, by tracing back the historical origin of the territorial disputes in the Laoxikai area,the newspaper articles sorted out the expansion process and negotiation details of the French concession since its demarcation,looking for hist orical evidence to prove that the Laoxikai area belongs to Chinese territory. Meanwhile, the effectiveness of the newspapers was brought into play,and a series of actions taken by the French diplomatic consuls in Tianjin, including rent collection, land occupation, and detention of police officers, as a clue, promptly followed up on the progress of negotiations and carried out the overall process of the incident,and focused on the report of important figures and incidents.In addition, as an important channel to express public opinion in this incident,the two newspapers played an important role in public opinion supervision, and actively supported the actions of safeguarding national rights and the country and assumed important social responsibilities.
