A STUDY OF NISHIKI-E SHINBUN AS A BRIDGE TO THE MODERNIZING OF THE JAPANESE NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY

The Nishiki-e Shinbun (锦绘新新闻) was a novel news medium that combined the artistic style of Japanese Ukiyo-e with the journalistic elements of the modern newspaper during the transition period of Japanese journalism from traditional woodblock prints (newspapers in the Tokugawa period) to modernized newspapers. Therefore, this hybrid medium possessed the characteristics of both old-style Japanese newspapers and modernized newspapers and served as a bridge during the reformation.

This paper collected 230 issues of the Nishiki-e Shinbun distributed in Tokyo and Osaka from the local resources such as the National Diet Library, the Meiji Shimbun Magazine Library of the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo and Waseda University Library. By applying the text analysis, this study examined the primary characteristics of Nishiki-e Shinbun, exploring its modernity in terms of layout, news production, and content from a perspective of media sociology. Furthermore, the study aimed to analyze the reasons behind the transitional and bridging nature of Nishiki-e Shinbun, its status in the history of Japanese newspaper, as well as its role in the process of modernization in Japanese society.

The Nishiki-e Shinbun relied on woodblock printing, resulting in a longer production cycle. Its contents were mostly based on transplantation and reproduction, with a focus on covering social news. The layout emphasized news illustration to enhance readability and appeal to the masses. Through a large number of commendable, cautionary and enlightening texts, Nishiki-e Shinbun sought to bring enlightenment to readers and assumed the responsibility of educating the public. In terms of drawing techniques, layout design, colors, patterns, and news visualization, Nishiki-e Shinbun demonstrated modernity with its recognizable, attention- grabbing, concise, and clear design, which brought newspapers closer to readers. Regarding language, Nishiki-e Shinbun adopted easy-to-understand language, making the news more readable and understandable, which promoted the universalization of newspapers. In addition, it exposed the nation to Western civilization by disseminating western technologies and modern school literature. It reported news about many commendations, warnings, inspirational and laying the foundation for public manners and modern Japanese thoughts.

As a medium that emerged during Japan's transition to modernization, Nishiki-e Shinbun was created to adapt to the needs of Japan's social transformation and to enlighten the public. Unlike major newspapers, which used many Kanji (Japanese characters borrowed from Chinese) without kana annotation and required a higher level of reading culture from readers, Nishiki-e Shinbun utilized illustrations and kana annotation with its accessible and educational content, laying the foundation for Nishiki-e Shinbun to reach a mass audience. On the one hand, it made up for the shortcomings of major newspapers and disseminated news to the public, and on the other hand, it promoted the founding of tabloid newspapers, the originator of major newspapers, which led to the popularization of Japanese newspapers and set a new direction for the development of the Japanese newspaper industry.
