Aging, as a classic theme that never “ages” in literary history, has evolved into a mature writing style in the Song Dynasty after being carried forward by such figures as Tao Yuanming, Du Fu, and Bai Juyi. As the “culmination” of aging writing, Su Shi and Xin Qiji have created a considerable number of Ci poetry expressing aging themes during their middle-aged stage, often speaking of aging before actually aging. By comparing the middle-aged mindsets reflected in Su and Xin's portrayal of old age, we can not only glimpse the similarities and differences in their cultural characters and life wills but also add staged and individual corpuses to relevant research on aging writing, reflecting the national cultural psychology underlying such depictions. In terms of their emotional attitudes towards aging, Su Shi and Xin Qiji resonate strongly, often lamenting, resisting, and accepting aging. Leveraging the advantage of Ci poetry in expressing emotions, they fully integrate rational thinking and sensuous experiences about aging, incorporating profound and complex moods and profound inquiries into life and the universe into their poetry. However, beneath their similar emotional shells, they possess distinct mindsets and life perceptions. In terms of subject matter and implications, Xin Qiji's poetry often reveals a strong sense of sorrow and indignation, with a greater intensity and force in emotional expression than Su Shi. In contrast, Su Shi often connects aging with his attachment to his hometown, which is relatively rare in Xin's poetry. In terms of emotional direction, Xin Qiji's attitude towards aging is contradictory and changeable, never truly reconciling with it. His strong willpower and heroism, however, endow his poetry with resilience and profound tragic consciousness. Conversely, Su Shi's poetry exhibits a trend of becoming less worried about aging as he ages, with his ideological diversity and harmony enabling him to naturally accept and transcend the shackles of aging. |
