中晚唐时期是唐传奇小说最为兴盛的时期，也是女性精怪形象出现最集中、出色者最多的时期。女性精怪形象兼具精怪与女性属性。精怪本身便有神秘、奇幻等意趣；女性形象也易被寄予许多臆想，尤其在唐代多男性书写的环境之下。从对文本的分析中我们可以发现女性精怪形象的几大基本特点——容色极美、才能出众、带有自身本性特点……这些特征由其双重属性决定，并与之一起促成故事模式的成型，推动情节变化，甚至预示或铺垫结局。此外，女性精怪的特殊身份也便于创作者进行艺术化创造，更充分地寄予作者的婚姻、仕途理想与人生感慨；女性精怪（尤其是婚恋题材）大多数的悲剧结局又明显显示出唐代悲剧性的审美心理。
