This thesis discusses the difficulties of communication of two characters, Clarissa Dalloway and Septimus Warren Smith in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway. It analyzes their failed communication with their lovers, spouses, and other less intimate characters. It examines the reasons for their challenged interaction, and the negative psychological consequences of their inability to make themselves understood and understand others. In the meantime, the technique and device by which Woolf has employed to emphasize their failed communication are also discussed under Cooperative Principles by Paul Grice. It concludes that the characters in this novel suffer from extreme loneliness and confinement due to their failed communication, which results from their distinctive language styles and their psychological conditions. In post-war London, the connection between people is shattered, with people enduring eternal sorrow and pain.
