This paper explores the understanding of Chinese culture by American female poet Amy Lowell and her relationship with classical Chinese poetry. Lowell was an Imagist poet who conveyed profound connotations through concise imagery. Her passion for Oriental culture propelled her to create poetry about China and to translate classical Chinese poetry. This paper focuses on introducing the creation background of Lowell’s poetry and translation work Fir-Flower Tablets and its connection with Chinese culture. The thesis found that Lowell and collaborator Florence Ayscough held a positive attitude towards Chinese culture and used it as a source of creative inspiration and expression. This thesis also compares the imagery concepts of classical Chinese poetry and Western Imagist poetry and explores the impact and inspiration of Lowell’s incorporation of imagery elements from Chinese poetry into her own work. In addition, this paper pays attention to the role of Chinese character glyph in Lowell’s creation and investigates the influence of her method of breaking down Chinese characters on poetry.
