Ray Bradbury is a prominent 20-century American science fiction writer whose works are renowned for their astute observation and contemplation of social phenomena. Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953, is his most famous novel. The novel narrates the process of the protagonist, Montag, transforming from a book-burner to a book-lover in a society where books are banned, and eventually breaking away from the society and living in exile. Fahrenheit 451 forcefully critiques the suppression of freedom of thought caused by rigid censorship of books and pervasive influence of mass media. Through the awakening of Montag, the novel also raises the possibility of human redemption in such an alienated society. This thesis examines the process of self-awakening undergone by Montag based on the theoretical framework of Herbert Marcuse’s aesthetic redemption. Marcuse attributes a political revolutionary significance to aesthetics, viewing art as a means by which the individual can dissolve alienation and restore humanity, and the cultivation of individuals’ aesthetic abilities as a path leading to an ideal society. The thesis divides Montag’s transformation into three stages, including the alienation from human nature, the recovery of sensibility, and the nurture of aesthetics. By examining Montag’s behavior and mode of thinking during these stages and the reasons for his transformation, the thesis argues the significance of art and aesthetics in an individual’s resistance to cultural oppression, and explores the novel’s envisage of human redemption based on the establishment of an aesthetic-oriented society, thereby revealing the profound implications of the novel in the light of aesthetic redemption. |
