Wuthering Heights is the only novel written by British writer Emily Bronte. The novel tells the love and hate between two generations of two heights, mainly focusing on Heathcliff and Catherine. Heathcliff, an abandoned child who is adopted by old Earnshaw, grows up with Catherine. After Catherine marries Linton, the successor of Thrushcross Grange, he runs away with rage and takes revenge on everyone after returning. This paper analyzes the revenge of Wuthering Heights through close reading of the text and archetype analysis theory. The paper consists of five parts. The introduction part summarizes the previous domestic and foreign studies and puts forward the central argument of the paper. Chapter 2 analyses the revenge of Hindley, Heathcliff and Isabella. Chapter 3 makes a comparison between the revenge of the three characters and the classical revenge archetypes Satan and Medea, and further analyzes their revenge motivation, revenge means and revenge results. Chapter 4 analyzes the implications of such arrangement. The conclusion of this thesis is: Although Wuthering Heights follows archetypes in the perspective of revenge setting, the differences of revenge ending show this book’s disapproval of violent revenge and preference of favorable family, education and civilization. |
