In recent years, clinical psychology research has increasingly focused on the nonverbal interaction processes between counselors and clients during counseling sessions, as well as their effects. Previous studies, primarily utilizing Motion Energy Analysis (MEA), have demonstrated that nonverbal synchrony between counselors and clients positively predicts the quality of the counseling alliance and counseling outcomes. This method, based on motion analysis, directly analyzes nonverbal synchrony during counselor-client interactions, providing a more objective and direct approach compared to subjective coding methods used in the past. Among novice counselor populations, there is often anxiety regarding the establishment of a good counseling relationship and the effectiveness of counseling. Additionally, with online counseling becoming a mainstream counseling modality, there is increasing focus in counseling research on whether online counseling outcomes are consistent with those of face-to-face counseling. Building upon previous research on nonverbal synchrony between counselors and clients in face-to-face counseling, this study aims to explore the relationship between nonverbal synchrony, counseling outcomes, and the counseling alliance in online counseling sessions conducted by novice counselors. The study utilizes MEA for the analysis of nonverbal synchrony and employs mixed-effects models for fitting analysis. The results of the study indicate that nonverbal synchrony is significantly higher in same-gender counselor-client pairs and mixed-gender pairs compared to opposite-gender pairs. This suggests that nonverbal interaction between counselors and clients is more coordinated and synchronous when both parties are of the same gender, or when the counselor is male and the client is female. However, no significant relationship was found between counseling frequency and nonverbal synchrony, possibly due to the limited number of counseling sessions in the sample. Furthermore, the study found that nonverbal synchrony strongly predicts the quality of the counseling alliance and counseling outcomes across the four counselor-client pairs analyzed. Based on the study results, it can be concluded that nonverbal synchrony exists between counselors and clients in online counseling, and it strongly predicts the quality of the counseling alliance and counseling outcomes. Additionally, the study found that nonverbal synchrony does not significantly change with increasing counseling frequency within the range of 30 sessions or less. |
