After encountering shame in the post-truth society, the default man David Lurie approaches the truth of himself, relocates his position in the world, and then overcomes his existential anxiety in recognizing and accepting shame. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's affective view of shame focuses on the individual differences and embodied experience, emphasizing the constructive force of shame. Sedgwick believes that shame can prompt the one to recognize and perform its queerness to undermine and reform subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, resulting to finding the specific existential posture of oneself. By reparative reading Disgrace, we can find what and how shame provides Lurie with effective force during his subject transformation. Lurie’s self-marginalization and self-othering in the experiences of shame opens up the potential of becoming straight-queer, constantly repairing himself in queer performativity, and ultimately presents an assemblage that embraces contingency, randomness, and n>2 differences, instead of the thinking of binary linear logic.
