Since it was first published, “Fanshen” has been a key text that guides the understanding of the Chinese land reform process. As foreign scholars seek to understand China’s development they inevitably seek to understand China’s 20th century history. Owing to its status as a key text in the history of Chinese land reform and the fact that it was originally published in English, “Fanshen” is often the first introduction many foreigners have to the history of the Chinese land reform movement. Despite the importance of “Fanshen”, western scholars have rarely used the work of Chinese scholars to further their understanding of the text.

This paper uses the work of Chinese scholars to assess the reliability of Hinton’s work. The main achievement of this study is to highlight the subjectivity of Hinton’s observations. This paper demonstrates that Hinton frequently makes claims that are not entirely supported by the evidence he cites, but that the data gathering undertaken by Hinton is still very useful for understanding Chinese land reform.

The Value of this paper lies in its specific use of Chinese sources to understand Hinton’s work. The research produced by this paper strongly emphasises the importance of the work of Chinese scholars and demonstrates the necessity of using Chinese sources when seeking to understand Chinese history.
