A Study on the Creation and Reception of VR Immersive Theatre from an Embodied Cognition Perspective |

Virtual Reality ; Immersive Theatre ; Embodied Cognition ; Reception Analysis |
From ancient Greek tragedy, theatre has come a long way, with variants flourishing like the branches of an ancient tree. VR immersive theatre based on virtual reality technology, such as The Under Presents, The Invisible Guest and A Moment of Floating Life, are born out of the nascent theatrical phenomenon of immersive theatre and have attracted the attention of many theatre lovers with their revolutionary approach to theatre proper. However, not much research has been done on this type of theatre. Based on embodied cognition theory, this paper explores the impact of VR immersive theatre on its creation and reception. Through literature crawling, this paper builds a three-level analytical framework of embodied perception, viewing interaction and cognitive resonance to analyse the unique creative characteristics of VR immersive theatre and the audience's acceptance of and participation in such theatre activities, respectively. The study finds that at the level of VR immersive theatre creation, the intervention of VR technology changes the temporal and spatial construction and narrative strategies of theatre, and also makes theatre playful. At the level of the viewer's embodied participation in VR immersive theatre, this study finds that under the influence of VR technology, the viewer has a new orientation towards the new technology and the reception of theatre texts with new characteristics, and gains a unique emotional experience. Finally, from the point of view of the integration of VR technology and theatre art, the author attempts to understand and reflect on the complex relationship between technology and (mediated) art in a dialectical manner. |
