The third feature film from Italian director Alice Lovalche, La Lazaro was released in 2018 and won the Best Screenplay Award in the main competition of the 71st Cannes Film Festival. The film tells a social fable in the style of magic realism with unique ethereal qualities and extremely rich text levels. It also involves many core contemporary issues and ethical human nature, such as class, religion, immigration, culture, freedom. Influected by Western religion, the film takes redemption as its motifs and employs a large number of archetype images and Christian elements. It tells the story of a simple rural youth, Lazaro, who accidentally falls into a cliff and falls into a valley, and miracingly comes back to the modern society. In order to find his old friends, he has to go through a series of stories, such as deception, driving away and reunion. The director's ambition is to make Lazzaro, an almost saint, wander from serfdom to modernity in the city, and present a miniature history of contemporary Italian changes in the conflict between past and future, tradition and modernity. This paper will re-read the film text from the perspectives of archetypal characters, archetypal stories and biblical motifes to reveal the potential influence of archetypes on the work and explore the social background and cultural connotation hidden behind the images and plots.
