在我国“社会管理”作为相对独立概念, 在20 世纪 80 年代初步形成。随着我国改革开放和社会结构调整，“社会管理”越发受到人们的广泛关注，经过三十多年的积累，“社会管理”研究正在形成自身独特的知识体系，因此有必要针对其知识体系的演化过程开展研究。本文致力于在社会管理学研究中引入情报学、计量学方法，采用以定量分析为主、定性分析为辅的分析方法，针对国内社会管理各时期的理论热点和实践焦点给予网络式研究分析，对于填补国内社会管理领域研究空白具有积极意义。本文采用1979－2011年《中国知网》（CNKI）上收录的“题名”中包含“社会管理”的3902篇文献作为社会管理的代表性文章，开展词频分析。同时，对其中属于北京大学《中文核心期刊要目总览》（2011年版）公布的核心期刊的文献开展引文分析。经过数据分析，得出社会管理研究知识结构和发展态势。 通过对以上数据的梳理和分析，本文总结了我国社会管理研究的研究内容特点和研究趋势特点。研究内容特点表现为社会响应性和政策主导性；研究趋势特点表现为纵向的历史关联性弱和横向的研究体系尚未形成。同时本文根据词频分析和引文分析的结论，将我国社会管理研究重新划分阶段，第一阶段是1979年-2002年，本文定义为“社会管理研究的启蒙阶段”，第二阶段是2003年-2010年，本文定义为“社会管理研究的转型阶段”，第三阶段是2011年之后，本文定义为“社会管理研究的创新阶段”，本文对各个阶段的特征进行详细的描述。本文最后对未来社会管理研究的演进趋势进行了简要分析。
