The source text of this translation practice is an excerpt from The Socrates Express. Through the thought recognitions of everyday life, American writer Eric Weiner aims to lead people live a better life with philosophy. Featuring logical deduction and philosophical thinking, and light-hearted descriptions of daily life, the book is varied in sentence structure and writing style, which poses the prime challenge for the translator to present smooth expressions while reproducing the original style. In accordance with Tytler’s translation perspective, the translator balances the orientations of the source language and the target language in an eclectic way. Guided by three principles of translation, the thesis proceeds the translation process from three aspects: be faithful to the original ideas, consistent in the original styles and fluent in expressions. In terms of the first aspect, the original text consists of much spoken English, whose lexical meanings and sentence relations depend more on contexts. The translator reveals the specific connotations by semantic extension and paraphrase. Footnotes are used for deep comprehension of terms including culture-loaded words and names of persons and places. Meanwhile, addition and omission are carefully applied to give a complete transcript of the source text. To present the same style and manner of the original, the translator pays attention to both the genre of the book and the personal characteristics of the writer. Rhetorical devices in the original such as simile, parallelism and hyperbole are also common in Chinese, so literal translation is adopted to reproduce the literary art. Besides, the addition of modal particles highlights the feature of colloquialism. Regarding the fluency and naturalness of the language, the translator starts with the key points based on the discrepancy between English and Chinese. The dynamic nature of Chinese is realized by conversion of parts of speech so that the target text can be more readable. Moreover, in order to retain the coherence of Chinese, translation techniques of syntactical readjustment and combination are used to deal with parenthesis and simple sentences.
Tytler's three principles helps the employment of particular translation methods in the translation process and analysis. Focusing the ideas is not only the core principle of Tytler, but also the basic function of communication. By specific theoretical illustration and case discussion, the translator presents the three principles and translation skills in this report. It is hoped that this thesis could provide references for future studies on English-Chinese translation and three principles of translation.
