After the September 18 Incident, the National Government of Nanjing immediately appealed to the League of Nations and sought the League's intervention. As one of the leading countries of the League of Nations, Britain's attitude may have an impact on the direction of the situation between China and Japan. The British Labour Party was in opposition at the time of the September 18 Incident, and its policies hardly had much practical effect, but existed more as a critical opinion. The British Labour Party adopted a different attitude from the British government after the September 18 incident. Mired in domestic economic crisis and internal political crisis, the British Labour Party was slow to respond to the international events of September 18. However, the Labor Party explicitly condemned Japan as an aggressor and supported the League of Nations to stop Japan's war actions. After Japan refused to withdraw its troops from northeast China and rejected the report of the League of Nations investigation mission, the Labor Party proposed economic sanctions against Japan based on the Covenant of the League of Nations. At the same time, there were limits to Labour's policy on the September 18 Incident, such as the fact that it never touched the call for military sanctions. In addition, the attitude of some individuals in the Labor Party after the September 18 Incident was also characteristic, there were absolute pacifists who imagined that Japan would eventually stop attacking if China did not resist, and radical leftists who saw that the League of Nations was unable to restrain Japan and said that the League was dying. In general, the attitude of the Labour Party after the September 18 Incident was more active than that of the British government, and it had more pursuits in supporting the League of Nations and maintaining world peace. Despite the lack of understanding of some problems, its policy orientation of sympathizing with invaded countries and promoting world peace and development is still valuable today. |
