This thesis attempts to compare characters of Nam-joo Cho’s Kim Ji-young Born 1982 (2016) with that of Doris Lessing’s To Room 19 (1978), specifically the way in which both novels explore the social institution of marriage and childrearing and how it affects the female protagonists. Forty years and dramatically different historical and cultural context separate both novels, yet the specific details of these characters and their everyday lives are remarkably similar. The loss of individual identity, as both characters try to exhibit self-agency by withdrawing from society, ultimately takes their lives in a final act of resistance. These similar realist narratives with an emphasis on daily life and how it displays the sexism and misogyny of the larger society show how women around the world and across generations face the personal and private struggles and show the universality of women’s social progress in literature.
