Fear of intimacy refers to the anxiety and fear experienced by individuals in establishing or maintaining close relationships. This psychological state not only affects social interactions but also has a negative impact on mental health. For college students who have undergone the emotional trauma of a breakup, this fear can be more pronounced, potentially affecting their ability to form healthy intimate relationships in the future and, in severe cases, their daily social activities and mental health. Therefore, addressing the fear of intimacy in students who have experienced romantic breakups is of significant clinical importance. This study aims to explore effective intervention measures for this specific group, providing theoretical and practical guidance to help them overcome their fears, restore social function, and promote mental health. Researchers reviewed the definition, causes, theoretical foundations of fear of intimacy, and the psychological impact of breakups on college students, along with previous intervention methods. The study highlights the potential of Group Sand-play Therapy in treating emotional trauma and psychological disorders, particularly in relational therapy, but calls for deeper investigation into its therapeutic mechanisms. This research introduces Functional Analytic Therapy, which focuses on interpersonal intimacy and has proven to enhance treatment outcomes in conjunction with other therapies. The importance of the therapeutic relationship is emphasized as a key to success in treatment, aligning with the core principles of sand-play therapy. The study involved college students who participated in an 8-session group intervention using both sand-play and functional analytic therapies to improve their ability to establish stable relationships and attitudes towards social interactions. A within-subject experimental design was used to assess the intervention's impact on fear of intimacy. Initial evaluations included the Fear of Intimacy Scale and FAP Intimacy Scale, alongside semi-structured interviews. After selecting participants who showed significant difficulties in interpersonal and intimate relationships post-breakup, the researchers conducted eight group sessions. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed through repeated measures and post-intervention interviews, examining changes in fear of intimacy scores, intimacy levels, self-image choices, and subjective experience reports. Results indicated that combining sand-play with functional analytic therapy effectively reduced fear of intimacy among participants, who reported less fear and more closeness in their relationships post-intervention. They also chose more positive and empowering self-images, reflecting satisfaction with the therapy and perceived personal growth, especially in confidence and openness in social interactions. This integrated approach not only addresses fear of intimacy but also facilitates overall psychological recovery. |
