在古代墨迹中大量存在“断笔”现象。这里所说的“断笔”，不是因为纸张缺损，或其他某种客观原因造成的，它是古人运用毛笔书写过程中的一种特殊效果。它发端于隶书通行的阶段，唐以后逐渐衰落。通过和现代人写字效果进行比对，我们发现这种书写效果传达了许多信息，是研究古人书写技法、书写习惯、书写意识的重要材料。

"Duan Bi” is a very common phenomenon in ancient Chinese Calligraphy. Duan Bi means a blank or gap in an otherwise continuance brush stroke. It is a effect resulting from deliberate technique of using brush rather than an unwanted cause such as abrasion of paper. It stemmed from an era when LI SHU（an ancient style of calligraphy current in the Han Dynasty） was widely used，and die out gradually after Tang dynasty. By comparing the writings of ancient Chinese calligraphy and modern style, we found out that huge amount of information is delivered through this special Duan Bi effect. Thus, Duan Bi is an important source for modern people to better understand the technique and art of ancient Chinese calligraphy.
