In recent years, the gender factors in cyber language have been studied and have been compared with the gender difference in traditional language. It can be seen that the gender difference exists in people’s mind and the network cannot hide this difference, which can be shown in network communication. The gender difference has been one of the most important factors to study not only the traditional language but also the cyber language. Network provides a situation, where both men and women can communicate freely. However, the males and the females pay attention to the different aspects in online communication. Leech’s principle of politeness can provide a framework for the analysis and explanations of different behaviors between the males and the females in online communication. The appropriateness of language is an important aspect to maintain the smooth communication. This essay analyses the male and female network communication language by the theory of gender language research to study the gender difference in Chinese university students’ online communication. It analyzes and studies the gender difference in apologies, refusals and praises among the male and the female Chinese students in online communication. It shows that the female students reflect more obvious emotion to follow the principle of the politeness compared with the male students.
