This study investigated the employability skills of undergraduate students from the Information Technology (IT) field in Ghana. The main objectives of the study were: to ascertain the most significant employability skills in the IT program required by employers; to ascertain the employability skills that have been achieved by the undergraduate students in the IT program; to determine if there was any meaningful difference between the employability skills demanded by the employers in the field of IT and skills undergraduates obtain from IT program; to ascertain how the employability skills of undergraduate students in the IT program could be improved. Data was collected from employers in the IT industry in Ghana and students from Accra Technical University (ATU). This study made use of the mixed method approach. An interview was conducted to retrieve employability skills expected by employers and then used the data to design an online survey which was used in gathering data after which the data was then analysed to answer the research questions. The key findings were that both students and employers considered communication skills as an important generic employability skill. Next, employers expected students to achieve the following technical skills in IT: Troubleshooting network system problems and solve networking devices and software faults; Knowledge in front and back-end software development; On-site installation, system configuration, and repair; Assigning computers and user accounts to proper groups with appropriate access permissions; and Understanding in the best networking security practices. Meanwhile, students rated the following technical skills to be highly achieved by them: High level of customer service and support to clients; Highly skilled in HTML/CSS; and Installation, testing and configuring new workstations, peripheral equipment and software. Self-motivation and motivating others during an IT project or any team work was the emotional intelligence skill that employers expected students to achieve the most while the actual emotional intelligence skill students had achieved was Managing emotion effectively when solving technical problems for people in an urgent situation. There was no significant difference between the employability skills expected by employers and the employability skills students had actually achieved. The recommendations given to improve employability skills of IT students were: to make practical training mandatory for all IT students, to extend the time period required for practical training, the IT department should engage with employers from the IT industry to know the employability skills they require, to update the technological equipment for training students in the IT department. |
