Eugene O’Neill is the founder of the modern American drama.He won Nobel Prize for literature in 1936 and Politer Prizes for four of his plays."Beyond the Horizon"that was finished in 1920 is one of them.Eugene O’Neill is credited with raising American dramatic theater from its narrow origins to an art form respected around the world.Until today critics of literature generally agree that "there is no real drama in America before Eugene O’Neill.So he is regarded as American’s premier playwright.His career as a playwright consisted of three periods."Beyond the Horizon"belongs to his early period.And it is an expressionistic play.His expressionistic plays during this period were influenced by the philosopher Freidrich Nietzsche, psychologist Sigmund Freud and Carljang, and Swedish playwright August Strindberg. "Beyond the Horizon"describes three young people’s unhappy ending.There are irresistible conflicts between reality and ideality in life.Especially Ruth’s misery ending makes us sad.Main character Robert’s beautiful dream is destroyed by harsh reality. It arouses our sympathy about Robert. I want to explain the relationship between reality and ideality by writing this essay. In this article,first,I will talk about the modernity topic of the "Beyond the Horizon".Next discuss its tragedy mode and "Beyond the Horizon".Finally,I will analyze Feminist approach in the "Beyond the Horizon".These three aspects can help us to analysis conflicts between reality and ideality in the "Beyond the Horizon".
