In recent years, with the elevation of women's status, widespread dissemination of consumer culture, and rapid development of social media, the public has increasingly focused on men's appearance. This trend has led some men to feel dissatisfied with their looks, believing they do not meet societal "standards," thereby affecting their self-confidence in their appearance. This lack of confidence not only impacts their self-image but may also affect young men's views on relationships and marriage. Many men begin to excessively focus on their bodies and appearance, striving to achieve an ideal physique. However, some physical characteristics are difficult to change through effort alone, leading to frustration among men unable to achieve their desired appearance. This dissatisfaction with one's body can have profound effects on an individual's physiological, psychological, and social functioning, potentially leading to health issues such as eating disorders, substance abuse, and emotional problems like anxiety and depression, even to the point of harboring suicidal thoughts. It can also lead to social withdrawal and interpersonal tension, increasing psychological distress and turmoil. Although research has extensively explored negative physical self, studies from a male perspective, particularly on intervention measures, are relatively scarce. Therefore, this study plans to conduct psychological counseling interventions for young men aged 18 to 35 through case study methodology, combining feminist therapy and the comprehensive model of male body image. This research recruited 85 male participants aged 18 to 35 via WeChat Moments, assessed their dissatisfaction with their bodies, psychological and social functioning levels, and other psychological distresses, and ultimately selected 3 participants for counseling. Counseling employed feminist therapy techniques such as gender role analysis, power analysis, and bibliotherapy. After comprehensive assessment, one representative participant was chosen for case presentation. The counselor and the participant completed 16 counseling sessions, with the entire process divided into preliminary assessment, intervention measures execution, and case summary. To fully evaluate the counseling effects, objective measures such as the Negative Body Self Scale, the Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults, the Male Role Norms Inventory-Revised, and the CORE-OM were used, along with semi-structured interviews at the mid-point and end of counseling. The results can be seen that after the counseling intervention, participants showed significant improvements in negative body self-image and feminist consciousness, which remained stable four weeks after the counseling ended. Semi-structured interviews revealed participants' positive perceptions of the counseling effects. This study, as a successful attempt at short-term feminist therapy intervention for negative physical self in male, provides valuable references for future clinical practice. However, due to the limitations of the case study methodology, the effectiveness of feminist therapy in intervening in negative physical self in male needs further verification through quasi-experimental and other research methods. |
