本论文是基于小说《勇敢的女性》（A Woman of Courage）英译汉项目的翻译实践报告，重点探究如何在译文中重现小说人物对话的语气。小说《勇敢的女性》以十九世纪九十年代的英国为故事背景，讲述了主人公汉娜追求女性独立解放的人生经历。小说中存在大量人物对话，人物语言对刻画人物性格、推动故事情节起着重要作用，对话翻译直接影响整个小说的翻译质量。由于语气与对话的人际意义密不可分，且英汉两种语言的语气系统存在许多差异，如何在译文中重现原文语气、减少人际意义损失是本次翻译的难点。

本报告以系统功能语言学中的人际功能为依据，在语气系统的指导下，结合英汉语气系统的表达差异，探讨了英文小说中人物对话的语气翻译方法，共归纳出四种语气翻译方法，分别为添加语气助词、添加语气副词、转换原文语气和使用动词重叠。研究发现，译者可以从对话的言语角色、言语功能和说话人的情感态度三个维度分析原文的人际意义，然后根据英汉语气系统的表达差异，选择合适的翻译方法，降低人际意义在翻译过程中的损失，从而重现原文语气。

This thesis is based on the English to Chinese translation project of the novel A Woman of Courage, focusing on how to reproduce the mood of the dialogues in the novel. Set in Britain in the 1890s, the novel A Woman of Courage depicts the great efforts made by Hannah, the heroine, on the way for female independence and liberation. There are a lot of dialogues in the novel, which play a very important role in shaping the characters and promoting the storyline. The translation of dialogues directly affects the translation quality of the whole novel. Due to the close relationship between mood and interpersonal meaning and the differences between English and Chinese mood systems, it can be difficult to reproduce the mood and reduce the loss of interpersonal meaning of the original dialogues during the process of translation.

This report has explored the mood translation methods of English novel dialogues, based on the interpersonal function in Systemic Functional Linguistics, under the guidance of the mood system and with consideration of the expression differences between the English and Chinese mood systems. The report finally summarized four mood translation methods in total, which are adding mood auxiliary, adding mood adverb, mood conversion and verb overlapping. It has been found that translators can identify the interpersonal meaning of the original text from the speech roles, speech function and the emotional attitudes of the speakers, and then choose the appropriate translation methods to reduce the loss of interpersonal meaning in the translation process according to the expression differences between the two mood systems, so as to reproduce the mood of the original text.
