Children are the hope and future of a family, and the safety of children is crucial for countless households. Injuries represent a significant threat to the safety of children. The family is the primary setting for a child's life, with over half of childhood injuries occurring within the home environment. Existing solutions for preventing common injuries in the home, such as falls, burns, and ingestion accidents, typically rely on a combination of manual supervision, physical protective products, and smart safety products. However, parents cannot watch over their children at all times, and certain daily activities like cooking create safety gaps for children. Physical protective products mainly address environmental hazards, while current smart safety products, primarily camera-based, are unable to monitor active and mobile preschool children effectively. Hence, the researchers aim to introduce autonomous mobile robotic dogs as a new solution for child safety. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of the developmental characteristics of preschool children and their family dynamics through domestic and international research. It summarizes the characteristics of preschool children that guide product design principles and the family characteristics of preschool children. Recognizing the episodic and injurious nature of injury events, the researchers opt to employ narrative theory to study childhood home injuries. In the research phase, this paper employs desktop investigation methods to analyze 59 cases, summarizing injury profiles, supervision statuses, parental psychology, child psychology, and injury management for ten types of injury events. The paper identifies three main stages of injury events: injury prevention, daily supervision, and post-incident handling. Subsequently, 105 questionnaires are collected through a questionnaire survey. The findings indicate a relatively high incidence of childhood home injuries within a year, with the most common injury types being falls, animal bites, blunt force injuries, burns/scalds, and sharp object injuries. Injuries occur most frequently in specific locations such as the living room, dining area, and bathroom, depending on the injury type. Parents' education levels and the number of children in the household significantly impact injury rates. While parents generally recognize the importance of child safety education and have a high concern for their children's safety, they face challenges related to inadequate supervision time and a lack of knowledge about scientifically informed childcare practices. Many households still have various safety hazards. In terms of safety product usage, the majority of parents purchase physical or smart protective products, with nearly half of them using child cameras. Finally, through interviews with ordinary parents, the paper gains deeper insights into their daily supervision practices, experiences with injury incidents, and response strategies. It is observed that young children often have unsupervised moments in their daily lives, and parents commonly use cameras for supplementary monitoring. However, there is limited understanding and use of AI-related functions. Based on the research findings, a narrative-based approach is employed to construct narratives of typical persons, objects, and environments involved in injury incidents, serving as the basis for guiding subsequent product design. Ultimately, the paper applies theoretical research to practice by combining AI and robotic dog technology to design a novel child home care product, offering fresh perspectives for child home safety products. |
